In an era where the importance of supporting locally owned businesses is more apparent than ever, we are seeing an ever more steep decline in the amount of small businesses able to withstand the new economic realities. It seems to be caused by a mixture of high unemployment and a changing landscape of how people interact with the businesses they support.

The internet is a powerful medium and as we get comfortable living more and more of our lives online, we shift many of our purchases online as well. Meanwhile, more immediate purchases are often made at large retailers like Target and Walmart who offer the convenience of one stop shopping. Buying milk along side your clothes.

What does this fundamental shift mean for the small business in the coming years?
To understand where we are going, we must look at the evolution of local small business over the last few generations. To that end, let's take one of South Jerseys' most long lasting businesses, The Shops at Lee Newman Plaza.

The shops, now located at 2076 Rt. 70 East, in Cherry Hill, New Jersey

was first established in Collingswood, NJ in early 1955 by Mr. Lee Newman, who at the age of 67 had decided to forgo his retirement in favor of a more entrepreneurial pursuit. Lee Newman rapidly became among the most popular men’s clothing store in the region.

Enter the shopping mall. In the early 1960's, one of the first indoor shopping centers in the United States opened in the newly named township of Cherry Hill, NJ. The Cherry Hill Mall quickly changed the retail landscape forever. The monolithic shopping experience was simply to powerful and resulted in major declines in all of the surrounding downtown shopping districts.

By 1967, a 73 year old Mr. Newman was tired of fighting the mall and ready to take a rest. He sold the store to Harry Shiroff. The 27 year old Mr. Shiroff was confident that the once successful store could be re energized by adding modern products and marketing. The next several years saw the Collingswood location regain it’s momentum and market share. Six years later in 1973, Lee Newman expanded to a second location in the Barclay Shopping Center, Cherry Hill, NJ. The Cherry Hill location prospered and in 1975 a third Lee Newman store opened in the Krewstown Shopping Center, Philadelphia, Pa. During the 1980’s & 1990’s additional Lee Newman Stores were opened in Bala Cynwyd Pa. & Northfield, NJ.

The men’s clothing business & retail in general continued undergoing significant changes. In the mid to late 1990’s, those changes mandated that retailers adapt or go out of business. Reacting to those changes, Mr. Shiroff made the decision to acquire what is now known as Lee Newman Plaza to consolidate & operate Lee Newman Fine Men’s Clothing & Shoes at one central location, Cherry Hill, NJ.

In 1994, with the advent of casual work place attire, Lee Newman again expanded and opened the first privately owned and operated “LN Featuring Tommy Bahama” shop in the United States adjacent & connected to Lee Newman Clothing store. Lee Newman’s history of embracing change led to the company’s boldest expansion in 2000 when the company opened Tehen Fine Women’s Clothing & Shoes shop in Lee Newman Plaza. Tehen features fashionable, high quality clothing & footwear, as well as the most coveted brands in a beautiful 5,000 square foot store. It has professional sales associates & expert tailors providing women with free alterations. Today, Tehen Fine Women’s Clothing & Shoes is one of New Jersey’s finest women’s shops.

Today the company is well positioned for the future because of our young and talented staff led by Mr. Stu Shiroff, Vice President of Lee Newman men’s division & Ms. Ana Santos, Vice President of Tehen women’s division. Our goal is to provide our clients with excellent service & unique apparel and footwear for both men & women. While it has been many decades since Mr. A. Lee Newman founded our company the energy and excitement of those early days still abounds in Lee Newman and Tehen. We understand the responsibility that goes with being one of the finest men’s & women’s specialty stores in the United States. Our knowledge of our clients needs and our appreciation of their loyalty and business motivates us to work hard every day to provide the finest products and service to our customers.

Today, like in the late 60's and mid-1990's, a change in economy is also met with a shift in culture and as has always been the case, The Shops at Lee Newman are ready to lead the way. Starting with their new website, and charging forward with a unique mixture of digital media and marketing campaigns, The Shops at Lee Newman are well positioned for the future.

The young and talented staff led by Mr. Stu Shiroff, VP of Lee Newman men’s division & Ms. Ana Santos, VP of Tehen women’s division recognize the power of the internet as a medium and social media as a communication tool. A way to let their customers participate and add value to their experience. "It is an exciting time, says Stu Shiroff. We love the idea that we can now have an open line of communication with our customers to listen and respond to their wants."
